In some circles, the authenticated You is called your Song Self. It is the removal of the personas that, over the years, you have taken on for self-protection and survival – called the Mask Self.
We create masks to cover up our wounds; to deafen the assault on our hearts; to hide from our own epic bigness. If the message we’ve internalized in life so far is that our voices are dangerous, or our emotions overwhelming to others; we will create masks to hide our true, tender selves, in order to survive.
Your masks have served you well; offer them gratitude for bringing you safe so far. But the world needs you to be You, now.
It is time to remove the masks and sing your Song of true identity.
I’ve created a 3-card spread to help you start the process. It goes like this.
Card #1: The Mask
This card gives you insight into what persona is loosening in your life; what aspect of your hiding is ready to be exposed.
Card #2: The Song
This card shows you what new authenticity is available to explore.
Card #3: The Bridge
This card helps you make the journey from old habits and fear-based identities to living a life of fullness.
It’s important to remember that this is a bridge – it spans between two realities, both of which you are free to choose. You can walk back and forth on that bridge between Mask and Song as often as you need to. Maybe some bridges are good kindling for a fire once you’ve crossed, but most will simply disintegrate after eventual disuse. Don’t feel like you need to burn bridges in this work; don’t feel like you have to rush it.
Masks are sometimes very helpful tools. The point of this exercise is to become aware of the Masks you are choosing and – when you’re called to – choose to wear them with intention and awareness (and to default back to Song when you are finished with them).

Here, I’ll do a quick one for myself and let you follow along. 🙂
Mask – Armadillo: Boundaries
This tells me that there is a boundary that I’m using out of fear. Maybe it’s a reactionary defense instead of a conscious, deliberate response to a situation. Armadillo medicine is really great stuff – but I’m being shown that there’s an area where I’m using it to hide in a not so healthy way.
Song – Otter: Woman Power
Ah, this makes me tear up a little! Otter is the totem animal for my second chakra, wherein I’ve been doing a massive work in the past few weeks. The second chakra is associated with self expression, so to be reminded of my Song animal by the Song card is pretty powerful!
Otter is telling me here that I don’t need to rely on being “hard” or “brittle” (like Armadillo’s shell) to be protected, but that I can simply go with the flow and be who I am; that I’m naturally equipped for the circumstances I encounter. (Interesting aside: Otters’ waterproof protection is actually a layer of air between the top layer of hair – “guard hairs” – and their soft undercoat. Lots of fun metaphor there!)
Bridge – Moose: Joyful Pride
Ha! This couldn’t be more perfect. Moose’s medicine is a reminder to bellow our awesomeness into the world; to own our accomplishments and take joyful pride in what we have done.
To have Moose be the Bridge between Mask and Song is reminding me that whenever I start feeling defensive, like I need to curl up in a hard little ball and protect my soft, vulnerable belly, it’s actually going to be far healthier for me in the long run to embrace and project with confidence into the universe my truest self – my Song self.
So, that’s a little insight into the Unmasking 3-card spread, and into my psyche and current work-in-progress! Remember, we are all in this together. I’m walking this soul-work journey right beside you; it’s not because I’ve “arrived” that I can share Wild Goose Guidance with my clients. It’s because I’m experiencing everything, too!
